I had a similar situation today and would like some feedback from the forum...
After work I'm riding along in expressway traffic, havin' a ball. All the sudden, I feel the sputter...time to switch to reserve. Damn it if it didn't keep sputtering for about 1/4 mile! I couldn't get over 20 mph and the bike just kept sputtering. I was in the left shoulder and I couldn't get over to the right shoulder: I'd have been run down. It was at a slow, left curve type section of highway. I was in trouble. There's cars whizzing by me 3-4 feet to my right.
So I'm mother-f*@#!n' this thing like, "kick in you damn reserve gas!" Would you believe the sucker finally did it up and shot off? I never had that much lag and sputter switching to reserve. It felt like something clogged a jet or something.
I guess my question is, does this happen to anyone out there? I did go my 90 miles, so I pinpointed that I should have had to go to reserve. What should happen when the bike calls for reserve fuel? Is this typical?
Oh yeah, and bikes look even dumber busted up on a flatbed being towed home cuz you dumped your bike. That happened to me last June. Geez...Call AAA, wait lookin at a banged up bike (turns out I could have ridden it home!), listen to the tow truck driver's story about dumping his Sportster years ago and chasing down the driver that hit him, feeling like a schmuck, then later, tow truck outside my house, hot summer afternoon, step out of tow truck, do my "walk of shame" up the driveway where my wife was cross, thinking, "if I'd only have seen that guy stop quickly in front of me 2 seconds sooner"...
